Le Burundi compte 14 aires protégées réparties dans 4 catégories de l’UICN à savoir 3 Parcs Nationaux, 6 Réserves Naturelles, 2 Monuments Naturels et 3 Paysages Protégés. Dans l’ensemble, ces Aires Protégées ont une superficie d’environ 166668,5 ha soit 5.9% du territoire national. La végétation naturelle dans les Aires Protégées comprend 55% de celle disponible dans tout le pays. Concernant les écosystèmes aquatiques, sur un total de 263400 ha seulement 10% sont dans les Aires Protégées. Le réseau d’AP du Burundi est globalement représentatif de la diversité des écosystèmes du pays (savanes, forêts, hauts plateaux, zones humides, etc.). Le Burundi est un des rares pays d’Afrique qui a établi les Parcs Nationaux après l’époque coloniale. C’est à partir du décret-loi n° 1/6 du 03 Mars 1980, portant création des Parcs Nationaux et Réserves Naturelles, que fut mise en place la législation relative aux Aires Protégées.

Les AP sont sous la responsabilité de l’Office Burundais pour la Protection de l’Environnement (OBPE). Depuis Février 2016, ce dernier est appuyé par le programme BIOPAMA dans le développement des capacités des gestionnaires des Aires Protégées et la collecte des données avec l’outil IMET (Integrated Management Effectiveness Tool) pour améliorer l’efficacité de gestion des Aires Protégées. Ce programme a couvert quatorze aires protégées du Burundi entre Février et Octobre 2016.
